What is the difference between cacao and cocoa?
The terms are often used interchangeably, but "cacao" generally refers to products that are minimally processed, while "cocoa" usually refers to products that have been roasted at higher temperatures or further processed. Both come from the same cacao bean.
What are cacao beans?
Cacao beans are the whole seeds of the cacao fruit. They can be enjoyed as a natural snack, used in recipes, or processed into nibs, powder, paste, butter, and chocolate.
What are cacao nibs?
Cacao nibs are simply crushed cacao beans with the shell removed. They have an intense chocolate flavor with a pleasant crunch and are perfect for adding to smoothies, yogurt, oatmeal, desserts, granola, and baked goods.
What is cacao powder?
Cacao powder is produced by pressing cacao paste to remove much of the natural cacao butter, then grinding the remaining solids into a fine powder. It is ideal for smoothies, hot drinks, baking, and desserts.
What is cacao paste?
Cacao paste, also known as cacao liquor or cocoa mass, is made by grinding whole cacao beans into a smooth, solid block. It contains both cacao solids and natural cacao butter and is commonly used for making chocolate, hot cacao drinks, desserts, and ceremonial preparations.
What is cacao butter?
Cacao butter is the natural fat extracted from cacao beans. It has a delicate chocolate aroma and is widely used in chocolate making, baking, cosmetics, and skincare products.
What is ceremonial cacao?
Ceremonial cacao is high-quality cacao paste produced with minimal processing to preserve its natural character. Traditionally, it has been used in ceremonies, meditation, and mindful rituals, while today many people also enjoy it as part of their daily routine.

About Ceremonial Cacao
What is ceremonial cacao?
Ceremonial cacao is pure, minimally processed cacao made from carefully selected beans. Unlike conventional cocoa powder, it retains its natural cacao butter and rich flavor, offering a deeper and more authentic cacao experience. Traditionally, it has been enjoyed in rituals, meditation, and mindful daily practices, but it can also simply be part of a nourishing morning or evening routine.
How is ceremonial cacao different from regular cocoa powder?
The main difference is the processing. Most commercial cocoa powders have much of the natural cacao butter removed and are heavily processed. Our ceremonial cacao remains whole and minimally processed, preserving its full flavor, creamy texture, and naturally occurring compounds.
How do I prepare ceremonial cacao?
Chop or grate the desired amount of cacao and add it to hot water or your favorite plant-based milk. Heat gently without boiling and whisk or blend until smooth. You can enjoy it plain or add spices such as cinnamon, vanilla, cardamom, or a natural sweetener if desired.
How much cacao should I use?
- For everyday enjoyment: We recommend 20-30 grams per serving.
- For a deeper ceremonial experience: Many people use 30-40 grams.
If you're new to ceremonial cacao, start with a smaller serving and discover what feels right for your body.
Does ceremonial cacao contain caffeine?
Yes, cacao naturally contains a small amount of caffeine. It is also naturally rich in theobromine, a gentle plant compound that many people experience as providing calm, sustained energy and focus.
How long does ceremonial cacao stay fresh?
When stored properly, ceremonial cacao typically remains fresh for 12 to 18 months. Please refer to the best-before date printed on the package.
Can I drink ceremonial cacao every day?
Absolutely. Many people enjoy ceremonial cacao as part of their daily ritual. Whether you prefer it in the morning for a gentle start to the day or in the evening for a mindful moment, you can adjust the serving size to suit your personal preference.
